Yes! The joys of back to school happened again!
My oldest went into middle school, which in this part of my state starts in 6th grade. My middle child started 4th grade this morning.
Summer break started back at the first week of June, so they have had plenty of time off.
They vacationed, slept late, played lots of video games, got tons of sun, and now finally they are getting back into a nice routine.
Back to School Supply Lists
The only thing that really bothered me about back to school this year is the school supply lists. It seems every year they ask for us to supply more and more.
I keep trying to look at it from the perspective of the teachers. I know they put out their own money for so much, but the school supply lists just keep getting longer and longer!!
Thankfully between my couponing and buying on sale throughout the year we already had most of it.
Back to School – More Independent
They have reached a scary age though. I actually had to ask people I know when do you stop walking your kids in on the first day of school.
Well I learned I have probably been doing it for a couple too many years. So they got to be a bit more independent this morning.
It broke my heart a little, but they have to grow up.
The conclusion that most people said was around 3rd grade you should let them start walking themselves in and let them have a bit of independence. 🙁 It’s ok because they were just fine with it!
The kids were really excited this morning. Both of them are music junkies. Currently they have a thing for an artist called Watsky, which they got from me (but shh don’t tell anyone, lol),
I don’t know if he has become popular in Australia yet. Anyways, this morning they wanted me to blast him all the way to school. My oldest got out of the car dancing.
It was great!
I will say though I learned a few things this summer. A lot actually. As the children grow, I grow, and learn more and more about the best ways to parent them.
Next summer there will be more outside time, less video games, less junk food, less sleeping, more fun, and more structure. I really let the kids just free range it this summer and they showed me they need more structure than that.
My oldest gained only 1 inch in height, but 15 lbs over the summer. I had never had to think about their weight before this. All of them are naturally skinny, but my oldest became a junk food lover over the summer. (I take the blame, too many coupons for junk.)
So I’m hoping with some encouraged outdoor play and some changes in all of our diets, this won’t become an issue.
Back to School – More time for me!
With them being back in school though, it will give me a bit more time for writing. I’m thinking of trying to get some more information on foster care out for parents who are considering becoming foster parents.
So look for an article coming from me soon on that!
